Concern Universal

Concern Universal is a Hereford-based international development charity. We work in partnership to fight poverty and inequality in some of the poorest countries in the world. We believe that extreme poverty can and must be meaningfully tackled, by supporting practical actions that enable people to improve their lives and shape their own futures. Established 30 years ago, our humanitarian aid work in 13 countries reached around 1.5 million people last year.

We pride ourselves greatly on our efficiency, last year 93% of our funds raised went overseas. The funds that we are able to raise locally are vital to the existence of our charity. They enable us to respond to the needs of people in some of the poorest communities in the world.

We are very proud of the fantastic work that we do: both overseas and here in the SouthWest and West Midlands region. We have around 3,000 regular supporters here. We work with local schools, colleges and businesses to raise support for international issues that affect us all, like climate change, farming and food and peace and conflict. Acha is a single mother living in the Muembe district of Mozambique, who has recently learnt to read through membership of a local Adult Literacy Circle supported by Concern Universal. She says it has completely transformed her life. “I can now understand what is going on around me that has hitherto passed me by. I can understand health, the markets and prices, I know my rights, I can manage my home and now know what my children’s friends are talking about when they discuss what they are learning at school.”
